Dannevirke Fantasy Cave
An Award Winning Attraction
The
Dannevirke Fantasy Cave, winners of the Arts And Cultural category and
overall winners of the
TrustPower - Tararua Community Awards, is an example of a small
Christmas based beginning which some 16 years later has blossomed into a
professionally presented year round exhibit, attracting visitors from all
over New Zealand and overseas alike.
The Cave
is administered by a committee of 13 Cave Dwellers. In 1998 an Incorporated
Society was formed known at the Dannevirke Cave Dwellers Inc, and is
entirely constructed and operated by volunteers. Mondays are the official
workdays, but in typical volunteer tradition many extra hours, often at
night are spent all in the name of enjoyment of their project and the
pleasure it brings to the public.

We welcome your visit to Dannevirke's
Fantasy Cave.
-
The
cave first opened for Christmas in 1989.
-
We only had the basement area and a train
layout. Over the years it has expanded to what you see today.
-
Displays
constantly change and are frequently replaced.
-
Visitors
not only from New Zealand but from all over the world have returned
time and time again to see our new attractions.
-
The talent derived from a small town is
quite phenomenal with each of our creative volunteers having artistic
input.
-
The Cave Dwellers have built a new
train layout over the last three years, known as "Little Southern Hawke's
Bay Railway".
-
When we open to the public
an "army" of volunteers from all walks of life give generously of
their time.
-
Santa is in residence from December 1st to 24th and
he enjoys the
visits of thousands of children and the "young at heart". (You don't
have to have children to visit our Cave).
